When Is A Pest Problem An Infestation?
It’s often easier to dismiss the odd rodent or insect as a nuisance or something that has got lost rather than admit you may have an infestation. However, if you leave an infestation untreated it will get worse.
This means you’re more likely to have extensive damage to your home, especially if the infestation, is rodents or termites. Not to mention, many pests carry diseases and you don’t want them passing the diseases on to you.
The bottom line is simple, if you see one pest in your home then you can assume you have an infestation. In response, you should contact your local pest control experts. You can find a reputable one near you by checking over here.
In rare cases seeing one pest is simply one pest. But, you need to assume that it is more. If you don’t, that pest may get comfortable and will quickly multiply, creating an infestation which is harder to deal with.
Of course, seeing the pest isn‘t the only sign that you have an infestation.
Droppings
Rodents are particularly good at leaving droppings behind. They literally drop them while they are running. If you notice droppings in your home then you should be able to follow their trail. This will help you to identify where the pests are coming from, and where they are going, and even give you a clue regarding how many of them there are.
Alongside making it easier to deal with the infestation, you’ll be able to make sure the food they are targeting is sealed in containers, reducing its attractiveness.
Aroma
All animals urinate and it generally smells. If you have pets you’ll already be familiar with the distinctive aroma of pet urine. While many pests will stay out of your sight they still need to deal with normal bodily functions. The greater the amount of urine in the property the” easier it will be to smell.
In other words, the stronger the smell the closer you are to the nest and the larger the infestation is likely to be.
It’s worth noting it’s not just ammonia. For example, cockroaches are very good at emitting a misty smell that you won’t find appealing. It’s supposed to prevent you from getting too close but, in reality, it simply alerts you to their presence.
Damage
Termites eat wood and in the process will make it soft. In addition, the wood is likely to warp and any paint on it to blister. In short, you’ll notice the damage.
It’s not just termites, rodents are likely to gnaw their way through almost any material in your home. This can cause cosmetic damage, structural issues, or even problems with your electrics, potentially resulting in a fire.
Pathways
This is particularly relevant for rodent infestations as mice and rats will stay close to the walls of any room. This means they frequently leave a mark on the wall, a result of the grease on their fur. If you notice marks low on the walls and, after cleaning them, they reappear, you have a rodent infestation.
