Be Prepared
Our first tip is to be prepared and have a plan of action way before a tornado ever comes. You need to have a few items on hand at all times for an emergency such as a battery operated radio along with packs of new batteries.
You also need medications, water, and non-perishable food as part of your emergency kit. Your tornado plan needs to include access to a shelter for your family and your pets.
If you have kids, you want to make sure they are aware of what a tornado is and what tornado warnings are. Also, share your plan with them and educate them on what a safe shelter is in case of a tornado just in case they happen to be somewhere else when one occurs.
Have a plan in place in case something happens to your home. Be prepared with storm damaged roof repair in your area to ensure that your roof can be fixed if a tornado comes through and ruins the top of your home.
Know Your Shelters
During a tornado there can be flying debris which can lead to injuries and death, so it is important to find a shelter where you can wait out a storm. It is best to never shelter in a room with windows in case something comes flying through them.
When you are in shelter you want to also find extra protection by getting under something sturdy. Look for a workbench or a heavy table and cover your body with a mattress or a thick blanket.
Never stay in a mobile home during a storm and if you are in your car driving don’t try to out drive a tornado, look for a sturdy building and take cover.
Keep Tabs on the Weather
It is a good idea to stay on top of the weather conditions in your area during tornado season. When thunderstorms are expected, make sure you tune into a NOAA weather radio station or the local radio for tornado warnings.
Some weather signs to look out for include: large hail, low clouds, a green, or dark-colored sky, and a loud roar that resembles the sound of a freight train. With any of these signs, it is best to take cover to be safe.
