In early 2023, the sudden passing of a 33-year-old TikToker, Waffler69, due to a suspected heart attack sent shockwaves through the online community. With a staggering 1.8 million followers, Waffler69 had gained fame for his daring and extreme food videos, captivating audiences with his audacious culinary adventures. While Waffler’s case may be an extreme example, it sheds light on the significant role social media addiction plays in developing and exacerbating eating disorders among youth.

With platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook dominating their daily lives, adolescents and teenagers find themselves bombarded with images of seemingly perfect bodies, often enhanced by filters and unattainable beauty standards. Consequently, feelings of inadequacy take root, fueling the alarming rise of various eating disorders in this vulnerable population.

The Influence of Social Media on Eating Disorders 

The normalization of thin and super-fit body types on social media perpetuates unrealistic beauty standards. Young individuals are bombarded with carefully curated images that are often accompanied by hashtags, filters, and editing tools that create an illusion of flawlessness. Consequently, impressionable minds internalize these ideals and compare themselves relentlessly, leading to a distorted perception of their own bodies. The constant exposure to these unattainable standards becomes a breeding ground for the development and worsening of eating disorders.

Types of Eating Disorders and Their Link to Social Media

There are three main types of eating disorders. While there are many causes of eating disorders, social media can significantly contribute to their development. 

  • Anorexia Nervosa: Social media’s influence on anorexia nervosa is significant. Adolescents and teenagers susceptible to this eating disorder may be particularly vulnerable to the idealized and unrealistic body standards propagated online. The pressure to conform to beauty standards, coupled with the prevalence of binge-eating triggers on these platforms, can fuel cycles of bingeing and purging. The promotion of excessive exercise, diet culture, and comparison-based validation can perpetuate feelings of guilt, shame, and a distorted relationship with food.
  • Binge Eating Disorder: Social media’s impact on binge eating disorder is multifaceted. Individuals struggling with this disorder may encounter triggering content that glorifies excessive food consumption or promotes unhealthy coping mechanisms.   • Lastly, it is crucial to seek professional help, such as visiting a rehabilitation centre, in the case of a severe eating disorder to ensure proper treatment and support.

The relationship between social media addiction and eating disorders is a complex one. The constant exposure to unattainable beauty standards and triggering content takes a toll on their mental and physical well-being.
