PERSONAL SELF-AWARENESS: KEYS TO KNOWING ONESELF

We try to understand others when we don’t understand ourselves. The first step in understanding others is to take self-awareness and personal self – knowledge. These are the basic pillars of the development of emotional intelligence: knowing our personality, our emotions and how we present them to others. Only in this way can we enhance our emotional intelligence by taking advantage of resources and opportunities because we will be aware of them because we will be able to understand our reality.

Taking self-awareness

Self-awareness is the ability to recognize our own emotions and how they affect our mood and therefore how we behave due to them. It is about taking perspective on our actions and thoughts in a conscious way, it is the first step to change or regulate our behavior and improve, regulate or change inappropriate behaviors or the expression of emotions.

How do I know myself?

Getting a deeper understanding of self-awareness is not simple, but not impossible. Some capacity for self-criticism is needed that we can base on the achievement of these objectives:

1.Know what kind of emotions you are feeling and why you are feeling them.

Recognizing basic emotions is usually quite simple, we all know when we are sad, happy or surprised unless you have alexithymia. However, with this it is not enough, we must strive to know the nuances of emotions since the basic emotions derive a large number of secondary emotions each with their respective nuances. The better we know our more evolved emotions, the better we will know the causes of its origin.

2. Relate emotion with behavior and thought.

If we are not able to relate what we are feeling with what we are doing, we will enter a loop of mental and emotional confusion that can affect us both psychically and physically. Emotions are directly related to the nervous, endocrine, muscular system and of course with our facial expression, body movements or our tone of voice.

If we can analyze what happens in our body when we are influenced by a certain emotion we will better know how to control it. For example, when we feel anger, our heart rate accelerates with its impact on the most impulsive instincts.

3.Perceive how your feelings affect your personal and work life.

Another objective of self-awareness is to perceive how our thoughts and emotions are affecting our performance. For example, realizing that when we are angry our job performance falls or be aware that our states of anger affect our interpersonal relationships.

4. Be aware of your values and goals.

We call values to the way of thinking and acting that each person has directly related to personality. Values are constructed throughout life and may vary depending on certain variables such as age, social status or economic level. Recognizing the values with which we govern in our lives is part of the process of self-awareness.

Likewise, about the scale of values, we establish a series of personal objectives. These goals refer to the achievements we want to achieve in the different contexts of our life. It is important, therefore, to recognize what these objectives are to make them a reality, for this it is necessary that they have certain requirements: to be specific, to be clear and understandable, to be realistic, to be measurable and must be established in a certain period.
