A car is a great asset that holds several memories. But at some point in its life, it becomes uneconomical to drive and loses its value, according to UKCarMovement.co.uk. In such situations, one of the best options you have is selling it for scrap. If your car is not suitable to be driven and you are planning to scrap it, then here is the simple guide that will answer your all questions and help you have a great car scrapping experience.

Look for the right ATF

Visit multiple authorized treatment facilities (ATFs) in your area to select the one that meets your needs the best. An authorized treatment facility is a licensed company that follows the right car scrapping protocol. There are scrapping companies that are not authorized, and selling your car to them is illegal. So, make sure the company you choose is authorized.

Get your essential documents

Prepare all the essential documents before taking your car to the scrapping company. You should have your car’s logbook with you to show that you are its real owner. You should also have documents that prove your identity and residence. These can be your photo ID, utility bill, passport, etc.

Find the scrapping value of your car

The scrapping value of cars varies from one to the other. Many factors collectively affect a car’s scrap value. These factors include the worth of manufacturing material, condition of the car, car’s weight and size, etc. There are many online tools that you can use to determine your car’s scrap value. You will have to put the required information to get the estimated quote.

Schedule a pickup

Once you have selected an ATF, it is time to schedule a pickup. Give the scrapping company a suitable time and date. The company will send its own vehicle and workers to pick up your car. If your car is located near the scrapping company, then you will get a good quote for it. On the contrary, if the car is far, its scrap value will reduce automatically.

Get the payment

The ATF will scrap your car and make its payment. According to the Scrap Metal Dealers Act issued in 2013, it is illegal to get payment in the form of cash. You can only get your payment in the form of a cheque or through an electronic bank transfer. Do not sell your car to a company that tries to pay via cash.

Get the CoD

You will receive a certificate of destruction (CoD) from the ATF after getting your car scrapped. Usually, this certificate is issued within 24 hours, but some companies take more time than that. A certificate of destruction shows that your car has been recycled, and from now on, you are not responsible for it.

Notify the DVLA

Send your certificate of destruction or a letter stating the same information to the DVLA to report to them that your car has been recycled. You can be fined 1,000 pounds by not notifying the DVLA. The DVLA will send you the road tax that was unused.
