Essential Tips for a Successful Move to a New State
Whether for a new job or a better life, moving to another state is a big transition. It’s an exciting time, but it comes with plenty of stress. Here, we uncover several tips on how to make an out-of-state move work for you.
Contact a Real Estate Agent
First, get in touch with an agent who can use their local expertise to find a home that meets your needs. In most instances, it’s best to start searching for a home several months before moving to a different state. Real estate agents have valuable state-specific information, and they can steer you in the right direction for vital services.
Downsize Your Possessions
Moving to another state is a great time to minimize clutter. Think about what you truly need and what you can live without. Not only is an interstate move a chore, but it’s an expensive one. By having a yard sale or selling unused items online, you may be able to offset some of those costs.
Find Movers
These days, finding a reputable moving company is challenging. There are hundreds of choices, and it can be hard to pick the right one. Every moving company is different, and some are more experienced than others. Read online reviews and ask others for recommendations so you know what to expect.
Pack It Up
One of the best pieces of advice is also the simplest: start packing early. The longer it’s put off, the harder it will be. Start with a schedule and a timeline that includes dates and times. By following a checklist, you’ll remove much of the stress from the moving process.
Set Aside Some Essentials
When packing, be sure to box up the important stuff. Pack cleaning supplies, toiletries, and paper towels at the back of the moving van so they’re the first things you get to upon arrival.
Protect Important Documents
In the chaos before an interstate move, many forget to pack away essential documents. Pack driver’s licenses, vehicle titles, birth certificates, and Social Security cards carefully and keep them within arm’s reach. You may not need these papers right now, but you’ll need them when you arrive.
Submit a Change of Address
Next, notify the Postal Service of your new address. They’ll forward important mail to your new home. Don’t forget to notify your bank, credit card issuers, workplace, utility and insurance companies, subscription services, and service providers.
Update Your Driver’s License
If you’re a driver, you’ll need a license in your new state. Most states require new arrivals to update their licenses within a short time. Bring your existing license and proof of residency to the DMV in your new home state, and you’ll be good to go.
Transfer Utilities
After moving, a power outage is the last thing you want to deal with. Before making the move, start utility services such as:
- Gas
- Water
- Electricity
- Internet
- Cable
Some services, such as cable and internet, require installation dates. By setting them up ahead of time, you’ll be able to adjust to your new surroundings quickly.
