Catching a Cheating Spouse: 7 Tips to Keep In Mind

Catching a Cheating Spouse

A poll of 441 people showed that over 46% of individuals in a monogamous relationship had an affair. It’s common for partners to cheat due to anger, neglect, sexual desire, low levels of commitment, poor self-esteem, and more. This doesn’t justify their actions, but it provides you with some insight into their behavior.

Do you suspect your spouse is being unfaithful? Catching a cheating spouse may be as simple as checking their bank statements or as involved as hiring a private investigator. No matter what avenue you take, there are multiple ways you can confirm your suspicions.

This article walks you through the ins and out of catching a cheating spouse red-handed.

Is Your Spouse Cheating?

Before you attach tracking devices to your spouse’s car, it’s best to consider the situation. Here are some signs your spouse is cheating on you:

  • Their physical appearance has improved for no reason
  • They’re being secretive about using the computer or their phone
  • You often can’t reach them for long periods at a time
  • You have much less sex with one another
  • Your spouse acts hostile toward you
  • They have sudden, unexplained schedule changes
  • Their friends act strange around you
  • There are expenses you can’t explain
  • You have a lack of emotional intimacy
  • Your partner avoids discussing infidelity

If you think your spouse is being unfaithful, the best thing you can do is ask them. Be direct and to the point — come right out and ask them if they’re cheating on you.

Should your spouse be unwilling to answer honestly, they might lie, deny the accusations (despite any proof you may have), or become angry and hostile at the notion of them having an affair.

Remember to wait until you have some type of tangible proof before confronting them.

1. Check Their DMs

You should check your spouse’s DMs if you suspect infidelity in your marriage. You should also track their social media “whereabouts”. Are there particular groups they belong to, or people they have repeated interactions with?

To check your spouse’s social media, you’ll need access to their passwords and login information. Otherwise, you can only track the information they share publically, but you can keep an eye on the pages and profiles they follow, along with public conversations.

2. Hire a Private Investigator

If you think your spouse is acting suspiciously but can’t access their DMs, keep a journal of their suspicious behavior. Look for patterns.

However, you might struggle to connect the dots. This is where a private investigator comes into play.

Private investigators have the training and experience to follow your spouse and track their whereabouts.

You can hire a private investigator to gather photos, videos, and any other pertinent information. They can also testify regarding their findings.

When you hire a private investigator, you’ll have access to criminal background checks and possibly undercover work as they try to gain valuable information on your behalf. The information your private investigator obtains can be used for alimony cases, child custody, and the division of property.

3. Install a Spycam

Are you concerned that your spouse is cheating on you when you’re at work? If so, install a spycam or some type of nanny cam somewhere inconspicuous. You’ll receive alerts during the day if any activity is detected.

Mini wireless nanny cams are easy to hide on bookshelves, mantles, and desks. Just be sure to familiarize yourself with local privacy laws before installing one if you intend on using it in court.

4. Make Unannounced Visits

Should you suspect your spouse is cheating on you at work, consider making an unannounced visit. You can even switch up your work schedule and come home early one day to try and catch them in the act.

You can also make unannounced visits if your spouse is “out with their friends”. Just be sure you have an excuse at the ready for why you made an unannounced visit, just in case they’re not cheating.

5. Monitor Bank Statements

Bank statements can help you determine if your spouse has a hidden intimate relationship with someone else. Are there any unexplained suspicious charges, such as jewelry, hotel rooms, or other personal items?

If you have an ATM card, pay close attention to any withdrawals, along with the date and time. You should also pay close attention to new spending habits or reoccurring and unexplained monthly expenses.

6. Check Phone Activity

Your spouse’s phone activity can paint a picture of their whereabouts. Look for repeated —or late-night— calls to the same number.

Red flags are phone numbers you don’t recognize or that look suspicious. You might even find incriminating text messages that prove your spouse is being unfaithful. You can also check their voice messages and email to see if they’re having inappropriate relationships behind your back.

7. Trash Folders

If you have access to your spouse’s email, always check their trash folder. Should they be enmeshed in an inappropriate relationship with someone else, they’ll probably delete all messages — but may forget to do this permanently. Deleted messages can stay in their trash folder for 30 days, so it’s worth taking a peek.

Catching a Cheating Spouse

Catching a cheating spouse can confirm your suspicions, but you need to be prepared for what you find. Should you suspect a cheating spouse and decide to work with a private investigator, you’ll have an expert on your side who can testify to what they’ve witnessed.
