A Beginner's Guide to Brick Engraving

Brick Engraving

Are you interested in engraving brick? Perhaps you find it fascinating or maybe want to learn the work around it. If so, we have a guide for you.

Stone engraving looks like a simple craft, but it takes much more than it seems. Working with brick is tricky due to the nature of the material. Some tools help simplify the process, but it’s always best to know the basics!

Here’s a beginner’s guide to brick engraving and how to do it.

What Is Brick Engraving?

Engraving bricks are typical when creating long-lasting pieces for memorials, walkways, ornamental paths, and more. You can add more décor by choosing unique kinds of stone or painting over them.

When choosing tools and equipment for brick engraving, you might want to consider your purpose. For example, if you’re engraving a walkway, you should use something that won’t fade quickly.

The practice you use also affects the quality of your work. Focus on improving your skills. You can also look into masonry career development and education.

How Does Brick Engraving Work?

Engraving on bricks requires you to sculpt letters or designs onto the stones with a sharp tool. Many people tend to use specific equipment to make it easier.

The process usually takes a while since you should pay close attention to detail. Small changes or differences can affect how the whole product appears. So, it’s good to know the basics of the process and grow from there.

How to Engrave Brick by Hand

Although it takes time, engraving on a brick yourself is possible. But this method requires strength, attention to detail, and a good engraving tool.

A typical device to engrave on brick by hand is by using an etching pen. It’s a tool with a tip that rotates rapidly, allowing it to chip onto more complex surfaces.

When you use it for engraving, you must transfer the design onto the rock before you start. A wax-based pencil or marker works best when you draw the structure, pattern, or words onto the brick’s surface.

You can also make stencils to the measurements of the brick, then stick them over it. You can use a Cricut printer or manually print and cut the design for your stencil.

Once you finish preparing the stone and template, place it on a flat surface or table. Use a clamp to hold it down if it slips or the surface facing the table is uneven. Remember to put on safety goggles before you start.

Open the pen and set it to 20000-30000 RPM. Start tracing the stencil until you complete the design. Try to maintain a fixed depth with each part you engrave.

Clean the stone to remove debris after engraving it, and coat it with paint or beeswax to give it a polished look.

How to Engrave Stones by Machine

Aside from engraving brick by hand, you can also do it with the help of engraving technology. You can use two types of machines for this: a laser engraver or a CNC router.

These require you to have a digital image of your design. Laser engraving burns the design onto the brick while CNC routers chip them.

The following are brief guides on how each of them works.

Brick Engraving Using Laser Engraver

Prepare a design using online or offline designing or drawing applications. A few recommendations include Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, CorelDraw, and other software.

Transfer or connect the design to the machine by following the instructions on inputting your design. Align the stone onto the workbench you will use the machine on.

If the device has its engraving bed, you should place it there. Adjust the brick as much as necessary to keep it even and at the right level.

Line up the beam with the brick. When ready, put on your safety goggles and activate the machine.

The machine will start laser engraving your design exactly like you made it. After it finishes, cool the stone by placing it in water and cleaning its surface. You can decorate, paint, or polish it when it dries.

Other methods use epoxy or paint fillers and different finishing methods. You can read here to learn more about brick stone engraving.

Brick Engraving Using CNC Router

Working with a CNC router follows a similar process as laser engravers. Your design should be digital, so you should work on that before you begin. Once it’s ready, transfer it to the machine according to its instructions.

Place your brick onto a flat workbench or the machine’s engraving bed. You can also use other tools to keep your stone even, like clamps, then attach the right milling bit.

Put on your protective gear and open the machine. Note that CNC routers use a chipping mechanism to engrave your design, so wearing goggles is necessary.

Let your stone cool and wash it to get rid of debris. You can paint it different colors or coat it with a finish to make it look smooth!

Learn How to Master Brick Engraving

Learning brick engraving doesn’t take too long, but it may take a while to master the craft.

Many recommend starting with the basics and practicing doing it by hand. This way, you get a feel for how it works. Afterward, you can elevate your work using different equipment and tools for more precise engraving results.
