What is a DSE Assessment
The DSE Assessment is a workstation or Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Assessment, also Called workstation Assessment or VDU Assessment, and legally required for all DSE users.
The DSE Assessment is a comfortable Assessment of a staff workstation, covering peripherals such as computer screens, keyboards, mice, chairs, software, and the environment, as well as display screen equipment (DSE).
Why do I need a DSE assessment?
To comply with current Irish law and protect the well-being of the workforce.
The health and safety DSE regulations require a DSE assessment when:
- New user starts work
- Create a workstation
- Existing workstation changed
DSE Assessments Service
The Health and Safety (General Application) Act 2007 sets out the requirements that must be complied with in the Visual Display Units / Display Screen Screen (VDU / DSE).
These rules apply to all employees, If the employee has no other choice but to use VDU / DSE to perform their work, or if the employee will continue to use VDU / DSE for his or her work typically at least 1 hour Station, or VDU / DSE is commonly used by employees on a daily basis.
The Irish Health and Safety Authority (HSA) defines a workstation as an assembly that includes a display screen device with a keyboard, input device, software, or combination of the above to determine the operator-machine interface. The direct working environment of (a) work chair and work desk or workbench, (b) optional accessories and peripherals, and (c) display screen equipment.
What constitutes as DSE?
Display screen equipment is basically any screen that plays the role of information display, so it covers a lot of equipment. Some of the most popular display equipment includes:
- Monitor or DSE
- Work chair

- Worktop or office
- Actual setting (heat, humidity, lighting, space requirements, noise, and radiation)
- The worker’s computer interface (the program should be easy to use and task-friendly)

It is important to understand that completing a DSE assessment is not just a “checkbox” exercise. A messy or improperly prepared workstation can lead to neck, shoulder, back, and arm pain, not to mention fatigue and eye strain. Therefore, having a DSE assessment is very important and we recommend that you do it at least once a year.
