Types of Veterans: What You Need to Know
Veterans
Are you a veteran? Have you heard the word but aren’t sure what type you are? If so, you’ve come to the right place.
These days cliques formed around military service abound in today’s world. But, it can be hard to grasp what is what and what isn’t what. That’s why we’re here to help you out.
In this guide, we’ll cover all the different types of veterans. That way you can figure out which one you are with ease and do it with confidence. Let’s get started!
Active Duty Veterans
Active duty veterans are individuals who are or have served in the military and are still currently on active duty. This means they are on deployment, in certain hours/weeks of contract, in reserve, or full-time service in the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, or Navy. The active duty veteran is on the front line and handles the defense of the country.
Active duty veterans are eligible for military benefits, such as healthcare, VA disability ratings, and educational benefits. It is important to recognize and understand that each individual’s service path and experience are different and still valued.
Active duty veterans should be aware of their rights and obligations, such as healthcare, voting, and legal action. If you’re an active duty veteran and want to learn more about your benefits, you can use a VA percentage calculator.
War Veterans
War Veterans are individuals who served honorably on active duty in the US Military. Generally, War Veterans fall into three primary categories.
Those who served in the Great Wars — World War I, World War II, and the Korean War; Vietnam Veterans. Those who served during the Vietnam War era, and those who served in more contemporary times — the Cold War veterans, Panama Invasion veterans, Persian Gulf War veterans, and so on.
Each of these veteran types has different experiences and respective benefits and entitlements. Every military veteran who brings an incredible set of skills and experiences from their service deserves and should have access to quality health care, education, and employment opportunities.
Retired Veterans
Retired Veterans have had long and distinguished careers that should be honored and respected. Many have served their country for generations, and many have seen firsthand the various conflicts in which our country has been involved. They have given their time, energy, and sometimes their own lives for the peace and security of our nation.
Retirement means that they have earned the right to no longer be actively serving and are now able to enjoy the peace and freedom they have worked so hard to protect. Other benefits they receive include health care, housing, and burial at a national cemetery.
These benefits are to honor and recognize the sacrifice they have made and their service during their years of enlistment. All Veterans, especially Retired Veterans, should be recognized and admired.
