interview Angelo Raguso aka FAW9

Angelo Raguso, alias FAW9. Italian Based. One of the most tech-minimal / tech-house music producers with hundreds and of official tracks published on the best Labels in the world, such us Freakin909, Lapsus Music, Hotfingers, Spinnin’ Records, just to name a few. Today he shares some tips with us on some tips  you should have if you decide to be a music maker

Hi Angelo, how are you today?

A little busy, I’m at work for a new project to be published for the coming year, we never stop even during the holidays!

You are a hard worker! Congratulations! Years ago you released into one of the most known EDM music labels in the world: Spinnin ‘Records – what has changed since then?

I loosened my grip a bit after publishing on Spinnin ‘Records with my friends Camilo Valderrama and Stamen. Before I published more constant stuff, regardless of the quality sometimes, but then I set limits, or release less frequent but quality music. “Enjoy The Deep“, the single we released, was a real success, so I started to publish step by step on labels more and more famous in the music business, for example with Nicola Assi I published an EP on Natura Viva, which contained the remix of David Amo (pioneer of tech-house music in duo with Navas), then another EP on Hotfingers, containing the remixes of George Privatti & Guille Placencia, and Jesus Nava (which were both played by Umek), then I did a remix for Groovebox, Andrea Mattioli, Sascha Sonido, just for name a few, and so on other releases on labels known in the sector. It was a great step forward, unimaginable doors opened before I published on Spinnin ‘

What are the best tips for creating music as a real business?

If you believe it or not, if you decide to become a music artist in a professional way, it will be a real business. The music you make will be your product, your brand, your identity, YOU!

But to make people decide to buy your music instead of another producer, you have to make it reflect some strategic and important points :

  • What’s your target? Deep House music for soft party? Trap / new school’s hip hop , then for teenagers? Hardcore Techno for heavy clubs? Choose the genre you fit better and work on it as well without changing that much, for example, if today you publish a single GOA-PSY TRANCE, tomorrow you will not be able to publish an EP of classical music! You must have your own wave and never change it, or at the very least, don’t go too far, or you will lose credibility

Build a team around you :

  • You must have a media presence, so it means that you will have to be present on social networks, so you will need someone to take care of your Facebook and Instagram page, have a website etc, a photographer for professional photos (which are the online vision that people will have about you), A manager who takes care of the most bureaucratic aspects, or how to organize an event, how to have contact with record labels, manage requests for collaboration etc
  • If you plan to pay others to handle parts of your business and marketing, it is important you still educate yourself in these areas and know what to expect from them. You may hate the business aspects, but you still need to be informed and educated to make the right business decisions for your career.

These are my recommendations, they have helped me a lot in 10 years of career, so I feel like sharing them with you.

Thanks for the interview, it was a pleasure
