Interview with Global Health Leader Avi Kerendian, Co-Founder, GGHTx

Avi Kerendian – Co-Founder of GGHTx:

Avi Kerendian is a cancer-researcher turned social entrepreneur focused on global health equity and healthcare change. As co-founder and program director of GGHTx, Avi Kerendian organizes public health mission trips throughout Latin America and Uganda that are beneficial to community-based organizations (CBOs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working with poor and underserved patient populations. He is the co-founder of GGHTx, an acronym for “Gracias” Global Health Trips, a global health non-profit organization specializing in bringing together volunteers from medical and dental backgrounds to aid in intensive, week-long mission trips with the aim of fostering self-sufficiency. GGHTx is guided by a mission to support marginalized communities in an effort to foster self-sufficiency by building alliances with locals, fundraising, and developing initiatives that promote health education.

About GGHTx and Avi Kerendian:

GGHTx started as small service-oriented mission trips but found ways to scale and expand healthcare access for over 33,000 people in rural communities across Mexico, Guatemala, and Uganda. The nonprofit realized that basic medicines and healthcare treatments were not always easily available, but that local volunteer partnerships can help provide that. Thanks to GGHTx Co-Founders, Dr. Arash Hakhamian and Avi Kerendian, to date, some 5,000 patients, 70% of whom are women and children, in over 40 villages, are now more easily able to make appointments with doctors and dentists, receive free, necessary vitamins and medications, and overall, have access to health-education resources they otherwise would not have given the harrowing lack of funding in these underprivileged communities. Two of the current leading projects being organized by Avi Kerendian include:

GGHTx Partners ASSADE & Zidan Benevolence International:

  1. ASSADE: A GGHTx + Latin America Partnership, with Latin American Executive Director Julio Chàvez. Together, GGHTx employs a full-time doctor and nurse, in addition to other health and support staff, and treats on average 30-45 patients per day – seventy percent of whom are women and children. In addition to caring for acute conditions, the staff increasingly focuses on preventive medicine to better avoid certain tragic outcomes that affect the indigenous population there.

  1. The Stigma Project: A GGHTx + Zidan Benevolence International Partnership, with Executive Director Kiyini Jimedine. Together, GGHTx helps eliminate HIV/AIDS stigma and vamp up the fight against pediatric HIV/AIDS through disease awareness, disease prevention, professional community and adolescent education, while improving healthcare access and treatment services for underserved and vulnerable populations throughout central Uganda. This is an insightful interview with a leading public health nonprofit and global health leader.

5 Reasons Why A Panic Button Is Essential For Elderly

Panic button provides an easy-to-use security option. Not only does it signal authorities with a push of a button and it’s less complicated compared to a smartphone.

With rising crime rates, the safety of our elderly folks is at risk. Especially the ones who choose to live independently. Here are some reasons why senior citizens should have a panic button with them.

1.For Immediate Assistance

One may wonder if assistance is just a phone call away, then why bother with a panic button? Well, because elderly people find it difficult to operate a phone, let alone dial an emergency number. This costs them too much time and sometimes, they’re unable to get up, make a call, and explain their plight.

On the other hand, panic buttons are available as a pendant, watch, or a bracelet. This makes them easily available to our elderly in times of distress. All they have to do is press the button which signals the alarm company, and they dispatch concerned authorities to their house.

2.For Protection Against Crime

Apart from prompt medical assistance, a panic button is extremely helpful in protecting the elderly from unexpected crimes. Whether it is burglary or home intrusion. The panic button is most likely helpful during burglaries after medical assistance.

Besides, houses of elderly folks who live alone are vulnerable and easy targets for thieves. But, with a panic button and a strong security system, elderly folks will have the police on their front porch even before the robber can make a run. Thus, make sure a panic button is always around your independent senior citizens.

3.For Easy Monitoring

Leaving our elderly alone at home means we’ll constantly worry about their safety and well-being. But thankfully almost every home security system is equipped with an application. Every element of your security system is examined through this application, including the panic button. This not only makes it easier for you to check on your loved ones but as and when the panic button is pushed you’ll also be informed.

Apart from that, the application notifies you if the security system isn’t functioning properly or if it requires updating. This is helpful if you’re on a work trip or live far away from your elderly folks.

4.For A Secure Living

Elderly folks can be self-reliant and stubborn, they don’t want to be a burden on their children or grandchildren. Hence, they choose their independence and privacy over living with a loved one. We can be a little hesitant in letting them live alone, but with a panic button, it becomes easier.

Handing over a panic button to our senior citizens, assures us of their safety and well-being. Also, with the help of home security systems, it allows them to keep their independence while living securely. One can also install security cameras, smoke, and water detectors inside the home of the elderly, only if they are comfortable with it.

5.For Peace Of Mind

The anxiety of unfavorable incidents occurring increases when it’s about the safety of our elderly folks. Ironically, with the help of a panic button, our panic about elderly protection is put to rest. Because one of the biggest advantages of a panic button for the elderly is the sense of security and peace one gets from it.

It alerts the police and other departments in case of intrusion, fire, floods, gas leak, etc. It also sends medical assistance to their house in case of emergencies like a heart attack, stroke, falling down the stairs or in the bathroom, and more. With the panic button, we and our elderly folks worry less about being left alone during unfortunate incidents.

care that your skin needs this winter

Care that your skin needs this winter

Skin; when winter comes, we all notice that our skin is much more sensitive and drier, so if we want it to remain in perfect condition, it is necessary to follow specific care to protect it and provide it with the nutrition and hydration it needs. Having a proper facial routine is an essential aspect to achieve this. It is not enough to apply a moisturizer any day to care for the skin, but it is convenient to choose very carefully the products that we are going to use since we could cause a few unwanted effects or produce an imbalance in our skin.

So that we can get the most appropriate facial care, Douglas offers us the best brands in cosmetic treatments. In addition, with the Douglas Coupon, you will have the opportunity to access the best discounts to take care of your skin.

Discover how to take care of your skin daily with the most suitable cosmetic products

First of all, one of the steps that we should never skip is sun protection. Although many people still think that sun protection is only for the summer, the truth is that the sun can cause damage to our skin throughout the year, and therefore good foot care cannot be complete without it. Using the correct sunscreen, we will avoid the premature appearance of wrinkles, sun spots, and other skin problems.

La Roche Posay offers us a complete catalog of sunscreens for all skin types, with the best guarantees. We can find from sun creams with SPF 30, up to 50+, with a touch of color, in spray cream or as an Invisible anti-glare facial mist, so that everyone can find the protector that best suits their needs.

Another essential step in any facial routine is cleaning. Dirt can accumulate on the skin if we do not clean it daily, as well as dead cells, which can prevent adequate oxygenation and regeneration of the skin. Therefore, it is recommended to use a good facial cleanser every day, such as Lancome cleansing foams and lotions. In addition to daily cleaning, if we do an in-depth cleaning once a week or every 15 days, with exfoliation included, our skin will thank us. The facial cleansers Foreo can become the perfect complement to it.

The hydration is another essential step in any facial routine. We all know that hydrating the skin is very important, but the reality is that few people hydrate it correctly. First of all, it is essential to choose a good moisturizer, which is suitable for our specific skin type.

To cope with inclement weather and protect ourselves, we must not stop using our moisturizer every morning, and of course, it must have a pleasant, light texture and with the specific benefits that your skin needs, such as anti-wrinkle action, an extra of luminosity or nutrition.

Kora Organics, an exclusive brand in Douglas, has the necessary products to achieve deep hydration. Another of the star brands in terms of hydration is Biotherm. At Douglas perfumerías, we find a varied selection of brand facial creams, masks, and oils, specific for normal, combination, dry skin, or for the most sensitive skin.

Don’t forget to protect your skin this winter and find your ideal facial routine with the most suitable products. In Douglas, you have a varied range of cosmetics from the best brands on the market. Take care and protect your skin this winter.

Although it will be difficult to avoid 100% the effect of cold, there are certain circumstances that can help avoid discomfort. Prevention will be especially necessary for people who have a predisposition to dry skin or who have conditions such as atopic dermatitis.

Brief history of cancer

Brief history of cancer

Commonly identified as a disease of modern life, cancer has accompanied and threatened man since ancient times. Attempts to defeat it largely shaped the history of human and scientific progress (and failures) in the face of disease. From early Egyptian and Greek physicians to aseptic genetics labs, through medieval operations, Victorian operating rooms, the discovery of anesthesia and X-rays, the monumental and award-winning volume.

The Emperor of All Evils by oncologist Siddartha Mukherjee, is a sensitive and intelligent approach to the history of this disease today crossed by marketing, media, laboratory businesses, to which the United States came to declare war on and which we are only now beginning to understand.

In 2010, some 600,000 Americans, and more than 7 million people worldwide died of cancer. In the United States, one in three women and one in two men will develop cancer during their lifetime. A quarter of American deaths, and about 15 percent of all deaths in the world, will be attributed to him. ” These overwhelming numbers are the gateway to one of the 2011 publishing successes.

Winner of the Pulitzer and The Guardian’s First Book Award, nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award and Top 10 of the year by a critical spectrum as broad as The The New York Times, Time magazine and Oprah Winfrey, The Emperor of All Evils is presented as nothing more and nothing less than the official biography of cancer.

Written between 5 and 15 minutes per day (what was left of free time to its now-famous author, but then respected and young full-time oncologist, more father of the family, Siddartha Mukherjee), the book has almost 700 pages and got contract when his deed went roughly in half. Of course, with Monday’s newspaper, the first thing you think is that it is incredible that the editors have not dueled for publishing it. But the truth is that its author ran into rather mixed thoughts where caution prevailed. “The responses were bipolar.

Or they would say, ‘No one is going to read about cancer,’ or, ‘How could this book not have been written before.’ ” What they all definitely agreed on was that cancer frightens, which only fueled the enthusiasm of its author. “For me, that was the wrong answer. If people are afraid, it is the main reason to speak, “he said emphatically, rounding up his ambitious project.

BRIEF HISTORY OF A LONG FIGHT

It was from the first autopsy that Galen’s theories began to collapse. There was no black bile but an organism to discover. The study of anatomy took up the idea of surgical ablation of cancer, inaugurating an entire stage as prolific as it was bloody, recently alleviated by the discovery of anesthesia in 1846. “Anesthesia and antisepsis were combined technological advances that liberated surgery from its medieval chrysalis.

Armed with ether and carbon dioxide, a new generation of surgeons undertook terribly complex anatomical procedures. ” The adventurous first oncologists managed to remove some tumors from the body, but they could not prevent cancer from growing again sooner or later. Again and again “they went back to the operating table and cut,

The therapeutic frenzy to end the evil crab had its greatest exponent in William Halsted: a cocaine-addicted doctor who invented a radical mastectomy in the late 1800s. Empty the women’s body as much as possible (removing glands, muscles, even rib bones) in order to achieve total remissions and, in many cases, where it was not necessary to operate, with the sinister intention of bending their character.

The surgeries were quite a spectacle. The 1900s inaugurated the era of celebrity medical “trustworthy” who operated to the delight of witnesses as privileged as they were intrigued. “The operating room was for them a theater of operations and surgery, an elaborate performance, often witnessed by a silent audience watching from a skylight above the theater.”

Dazzled by their own brilliance, they could not even see yet the failure of the brutal operation. It was that no matter how much they removed, cancer returned or was already waiting, crouched, in some other organ.

Around the same time, in a different setting, a series of coincidences gave rise to the discoveries of X-rays, radio, and finally, eureka, the crazy idea that this new form of energy might be useful for all this. It was a young man of twenty-one, Emil Grubbe, who on instinct made the first successful test: “Grubbe began to bombard Rose Lee, an older woman affected with breast cancer, by means of an improvised X-ray tube ( …) He irradiated it for 18 days.

Although painful, the treatment had some success. ” Gruebbe immediately followed up with other patients, all with the same result: the tumors were shrinking. At the beginning of the 20th century “a new branch of cancer medicine was born, radiation oncology.”
