The Engineering Procurement Construction Management Group, (EPCM) has recently completed the design, fabrication, and installation of a 1.5 km conveyor system for a large Government project in South East Asia. It was led by entrepreneur Rahul Thottiyil, and EPCM is now ready to offer its mechanical, electrical, and civil contract services all over the world.

Multi Award-Winner Rahul Thottiyil has been involved in major mining, port, and powerplant projects from Australia to Europe, and he is now aiming to become one of the world’s most competitive and sustainable engineering services providers in the world.

A mechanical engineer by profession, after completing his master’s degree in business and international marketing, he began analyzing gaps in the global engineering industry. His analysis led him towards a major gap in wear products and services and the handling of bulk materials.

He is keen not to focus on just one or two singular projects. Rahul said, “I enjoy working on larger business concepts and areas that can strengthen the mining process. Mainly I am focused on three areas – entire conveyor system projects for mining, port & power plants – entire engineering procurement construction management projects, plus service and maintenance contracts.”

He added, “I want to offer the most cost-effective engineering services anywhere in the world, and crucially these need to be sustainable solutions.”

What’s your thought about how the mining and port industry plays an important role in a country?

The potential of natural resources can be achieved if the individual country has developed the mining and port industry. In order to advance, the mining and port industries you need a variety of support. One of them is the quality of the equipment used in the production process for a mine site.

According to Rahul, the presence of quality equipment with the latest technology will improve the efficiency of the performance of the mining and port sector. In addition, the equipment can facilitate the exploration of natural resources needed.

“One of the needs needed in the mining sector is mining equipment with the latest technology to increase productivity and reduce working time, especially when market conditions are declining,” Rahul said.

To achieve such ambitious goals, Rahul is clear about what is required. “Undoubtedly, employees are the most important asset in any organization. Proper investment in your staff is essential, as are procedures for career development. These are critical to success.”

Regarding efficiency, Rahul exemplifies the trends that occur in the coal mining industry. According to him, coal production is currently experiencing a surplus. The situation is a challenge for coal mining companies.

“Facing this situation, it is very important for mining companies to keep production costs as low as possible,” he added.

In order to answer this need, GWSE came to Indonesia with a variety of tools for the mining and port sectors with the latest technology.

The products presented by this mining equipment and services company also varied, ranging from conveyor belts, rubber sheeting, rubber skirting, pulley lagging, wear liners, industrial glue, mine hose, to monitoring systems.

Rahul is equally clear in what he looks for when interviewing potential staff. I look for answers that feel personal and authentic, and are more than just ‘career development.’ Once I feel I have a good candidate in front of me, this question lets me think about the projects he or she might enjoy. If people are happy at work and love what they do, they are more productive, they will stay longer, and they will help recruit other passionate people they know.”

But it isn’t all work and no play for Rahul. In his spare time, he loves nothing more than racing cars!
