Capcom Planning More Remakes and Revivals After Success Of ‘Resident Evil 2’
Resident Evil 2 Remake launched in January, and Devil May Cry landed in March – before 2019 had even had a chance to put its socks on, Capcom had pushed out two very different genuine Game Of The Year contenders.
Both games managed to revitalize their respective franchises, draw near-universal critical acclaim and far exceed Capcom’s financial expectations.
Thankfully, it seems the folk in charge at Capcom can recognize exactly why they’ve been bringing in so many buckets of lovely cash lately, and the company plans to continue remaking old classics and reviving old IPs in the hopes that those buckets of lovely cash continue to flow freely.
This comes via Capcom’s recent integrated 2019 report, as spotted by ResetEra user ‘Jawmuncher.’ The report describes Resident Evil 2 Remake and Devil May Cry V as indisputable successes, with the latter’s sales numbers in particular (2.1 million units) having successfully returned the Devil May Cry series to former glories.
“Our initiatives are to (1) strengthen digital sales, (2) bolster our title lineup through the full-scale execution of our 60-month and 52-week maps and (3) awaken dormant intellectual properties”, Capcom writes in its report.
It’s that last point that should be cause for excitement. Capcom shared a similar sentiment late last year when it told investors that they expected to build on the success of Resident Evil 2 remake by exploring older properties “as a part of a strategy to utilize our library of IP,”
This latest report though essentially serves as further (official) confirmation Capcom wants to aim for further growth by diving into its back catalog of classic IPs to see what else could benefit from a Resi 2-style remake or sequel. This is exciting news, no doubt about it.
The only question at this point is what franchise will Capcom want to bring back first? Fans have been clamoring for a remake or sequel to Dino Crisis for years now, and there’s no doubt that a return the dinosaur-packed survival horror series has a lot of potentials if done properly.
There’s also the lingering possibility of more Resident Evil remakes, of course. There have been various unconfirmed reports that Capcom is actively developing a remake of Resident Evil 3 as we speak.
The reception to Resident Evil 2 Remake and its back-to-basics approach to survival horror meanwhile has even reportedly influenced the development of Resi 8.
Whatever Capcom has planned, if it’s anywhere near the quality of Resident Evil 2 Remake and Devil May Cry V, we’re in for a treat.
