Ambassador Maradona's

H.E. Ambassador Remigue M. continues. Maradona accomplished new exploits, even after three decades of his first affiliation with the United Nations.

Currently, S.E. Ambassador Maradona is the Secretary-General of the Independent Intergovernmental Foundation for the Use of Micro-Algae Spirulina against Malnutrition (IIMSAM), the Intergovernmental Observer at the United Nations. This title resumed in 2011, having previously served as Managing Director of IIMSAM from 2006 to 2010.

“As a person with a disability, or as we say in the UN language, as a person with a physical disability, I feel that one of the greatest achievements of the United Nations has been the establishment of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities … Being a polio victim in the upper limbs since the age of two, I always felt that The United Nations system was the only mechanism available to all persons with disabilities around the world to express their grievances and unfair games towards them, socially fighting. Ambassador Maradona says: “Taboos, cultural barriers, insensitivity, social isolation, and absolute injustice.”

For these reasons and my personal experiences, I am a lifelong advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities. Actively participated in the various sessions of the United Nations Committee devoted to the Comprehensive and Comprehensive International Convention on the protection and promotion of the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities, in my capacity as the Delegate Counselor of the Chilean and Vanuatu Delegations, and of course, in my role with IIMSAM.

With the contribution of the Ambassador, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has been ratified by more than 150 countries. The convention, widely regarded as the first international human rights treaty in the 21st century, is one of the fastest ratified treaties. “More than 150 ratifications are evidence of the commitment of the international community, through the United Nations system, to the promotion and protection of the human rights of persons with disabilities, and once again demonstrate that the United Nations is truly working,” His Excellency declares.

After his appointment in 2006, S.E. Ambassador Maradona played a key role in the IIMSAM battle against malnutrition.

As Secretary-General of IIMSAM, the Ambassador has the responsibility to fulfill the organization’s mandate: to work for those who are malnourished, especially the poor and vulnerable. This position also gives him authority and responsibilities to ensure that IIMSAM Council concerns are addressed to member states, issues are resolved, and where necessary, intervention is taken to uphold IIMSAM values and ethical authority, while the best course of action is followed to maintain the integrity of the organization.

Although this is a role of tremendous responsibility, Amb. Maradona stands out gracefully, as he did during his time at the United Nations.

Happiness. Ambassador Maradona’s notable contribution to the work of the United Nations dates back to 1985 when he was appointed as the first inmate with disabilities at United Nations Headquarters in New York. Subsequently, he held several key management positions and played a key role in promoting the creative support programs for the United Nations Alma Mater, a United Nations non-governmental organization.

His Excellency is a strong advocate of promoting sport and physical education as a fundamental right of every person and highlights its importance in the development of personality. He founded the “Futbol4Peace” campaign and was one of the youngest members to be elected to the United Nations Board of Directors Alma Mater, by Perez de Cuellar, the former Secretary-General of the United Nations.

In 2005, His Excellency the Deputy Prime Minister of Vanuatu and Foreign Affairs provided direct reports, as Goodwill Ambassador and United Nations Special Adviser to the Republic of Vanuatu, on social, humanitarian, and disability issues.

In appreciation, Amb. Maradona was awarded the 2006 World Prize for the Protection of Human Rights by the Indian Institute of Human Rights, and more recently with Mahatma Gandhi Siva (Service) in 2016, for his humanitarian efforts throughout his career.

To reinforce the relentless qualities of this leader, the Secretary-General of IIMSAM is also considered a recognized Spanish poet, and has received numerous honors and awards from established platforms such as the prestigious Ruben Dario Award, among others. He also published six books of romantic poetry.
