A Quick Guide to Proper Dishwasher Maintenance

Dishwasher Maintenance

The average lifespan of a standard dishwasher is ten to fifteen years. However, proper dishwasher maintenance extends the life expectancy of your machine.

Not maintaining your dishwasher can cause bacteria and mildew to form. Not only is it a health hazard, but it will also affect how your machine functions.

Are you wondering how often you should clean your dishwasher? Wondering what tools or products to use?

Don’t worry, we got you covered! Keep reading to learn how to clean your dishwasher and keep it in great condition.

Empty the Dishwasher

To empty the dishwasher, first remove all dishes, glassware, and silverware from the dishwasher. Place all clean items in the appropriate places in the kitchen or cabinet.

Remove the filter and either clean it or replace it, depending on as directed in the dishwasher’s user manual. If the filters need replacing, you can check this appliance parts store to get a new filter.

Empty and clean the bottom tray and return it to the dishwasher. Wipe down the walls of the dishwasher and the bottom tray to remove debris and food particles from the surfaces.

Inspect & Clean the Spinning Arms

To properly inspect and clean the spinning arms, first, turn off the electricity and water supply to the dishwasher by unplugging and turning off the valves. Take off the dishwasher’s filter and check for debris or leftover food that might be blocking the spinning arms.

Once cleared, take out the spinning arms and rinse them off in the sink with warm soapy water. Reassemble the arms back into the dishwasher and start it up to check that the arms are functioning properly.

Clean the Edges and Exterior

Proper dishwasher care begins with regularly cleaning the edges and exterior of the appliances. Start by using warm, soapy water and cleaning products, and work away from the dishwasher. Carefully wiping down the appliance door and frame, the top and sides of the dishwasher, and the kick plate at the bottom.

Use a damp cloth to wipe away any standing water from around the edges of the door and make sure the edges and seals are free of dirt or debris. For tougher stains, use an all-purpose cleaner or stainless-steel cleaner and then wipe away residue with a damp cloth. Once complete, dry the exterior and edges of the appliance with a clean, soft cloth.

Unclog & Clean the Drain

Start by removing all debris and dust by running a vacuum cleaner around the dishwasher. Inspect the filter and spray arms for any food particles. If there are chunks of food or the spray arms are clogged, remove them and clean them with water and detergent.

Use a cloth and a mixture of white vinegar and baking soda to unclog and clean the dishwasher’s drain. Pour the mixture into the dishwasher’s drain area, rinse away with hot water, and clean with a cloth.

Dishwasher maintenance is not a complicated task if done frequently. Regular cleaning, checking, and tool replacements can keep your dishwasher running smoothly. Follow these steps to keep your dishes – and your dishwasher! – clean and sparkling.
