9 Underrated Christmas Movies that are Worth a Watch

There is a plethora of Christmas classics that families relish to watch in the holiday season. Almost all of us watch the more prominent titles as part of the Christmas movie marathon each year. But we tend to ignore the not-so-popular movies. I would urge you to consider adding the following underrated movies to your list this year. Thus, expanding your roster of Christmas movies.

Here are the best ones:

Miracle on 34th Street

The only reason for recommending this movie is Attenborough and his exceptional acting. Although this movie is nowhere near the 1947 classic with the same name, it is not without merits. You can call this movie a different retelling of the original classic produced by John Hughes.

The rest of the cast and even the plot might not impress you. But the Santa will astound you beyond words with his acting and the way he gets absorbed in that role. Consider it a comfort food movie and watch it with your family at this warm time of the year. I am lucky to have access to WOW cable TV channels that offer channels airing Christmas movies all day long at this time of the year. If you are a cord-cutter, you can watch the movie online.

Batman Returns

Before you frown upon this recommendation, let me do some explaining. Many (read: almost all) won’t be able to link the name Batman Returns to Christmas. However, the whole movie is shot against a Christmas backdrop. Hence, the suggestion. The plot of the movie revolves around the mysterious Batman and his fights apart from the outlandish villains and car sequences. No surprises there.

The fact that all the events of the movie take place in the setting of a snow-covered Gotham city makes Batman Returns a perfect candidate for the Christmas movies.

The Man Who Invented Christmas

You will find many adaptations of Charles Dickens Christmas Carol, but this movie gives attention to the author in its true sense. You will find it rather interesting to dive into Dickens’ creative process as narrated in the movie. It will be intriguing to watch his character come to life. The maddening portrayal of Charles Dickens in the movie by none other than Dan Stevens will leave you flabbergasted. This new take on the Christmas classic is a must-watch.

A Christmas Carol

This movie that premiered in 1999 is by far the most accurate portrayal of the classic tale. It’s a one-man-show adaptation. In my opinion, this movie is underrated and deserves more attention than it has received in all these years.

The Bishop’s Wife

The story of this movie revolves around the character Cary Grant who answers the prayer of David Niven (a bishop). The bishop needs funds for a new cathedral. Everything works fine and the operations remain smooth until the day the bishop catches the eye of Niven’s neglected wife. Watch the movie to see how interesting events unfold.

The Holly and the Ivy

This 1952 British drama film is an adaptation of the play with the same name. The plot of the story revolves around the widespread Gregory family. As the family’s tradition, everyone returns to the parsonage in their remote village at the time of Christmas. The whole story is a long unfolding of family events and problems. You, yourself will get involved in a rollercoaster of emotions as you watch all the events unfold.

We’re No Angels

Released in 1955, We’re No Angels was the first movie in a decade that was directed by the iconic duo Michael Curtiz and Humphrey Bogart. This comedy movie stars Bogie who plays the character of an escaped convict. Apart from that, you will see Peter Ustinov and Aldo Ray who are the fugitives as well. These three decide to help a befuddled shopkeeper. And the rest you will have to watch to laugh at all the fun that happens in the movie.

All That Heaven Allows

This movie has to do with class consciousness. This Douglas Sirk film stars a widow who gets romantically involved with a gardener. Thus, giving her class-conscious friends something to frown upon. Jane Wyman (the widow) decides against the norms and continues her relationship with the gardener. You will have to watch it for a more detailed analysis of the film.

Father Christmas

I came across this movie as a part of WOW cable specials suggestions. Intrigued, I watched this quirky alternative tale of Santa Clause. Calling it an alternative because, in most of the Christmas movies, Santa Claus assumes the character of a jolly and bright individual. But this movie shows the dark side of Santa’s life. Father Christmas shows Santa on a vacation that is interesting.

What makes the whole thing even more fascinating is Santa doing not-so-Santa things. For example, drinking wine on his trip to France.

I hope that you will consider watching one, some or all of the suggested movies. You won’t regret.
