3 Tips for Sending a Care Package to an Inmate

1. Find Out About the Prison’s Package Program

Before you send an inmate care package, check whether the correctional facility is accepting them. This will depend on the prison and your loved one’s situation.

For instance, if they’re under a restriction, then they’re unable to receive a care package at that time. 

2. Send Letters and Photos

The best intimate care packages include handwritten letters and photos. Although it doesn’t seem like much, when you’re on the inside, you’re grateful knowing that your nearest and dearest are thinking about you. And although getting mail can be slow, it is far easier than sending larger care packages.

But you mustn’t use staples and include images that could be seen as a secret code. Also, you shouldn’t write about sensitive information because all mail is inspected and read by staff before your loved one receives it.

Further, photos are a staple in every intimate care package because you’re allowed these in your cell. It also gives your family member or friend a visual cue so that they can see what you’ve been talking about, whether it’s a new baby or a pet. 

A good rule of thumb is to print out the inmate’s name and ID number on the back so that it doesn’t get mixed up. Also, it’s important to note that most facilities accept a maximum of five photos at once. 

3. Treat Your Loved One to Commissary Money

If sending a care package isn’t enough, give your loved one funds for the commissary.

Although inmates get the basics, the extra cash will give them peace of mind and let them enjoy a treat. Note, you needn’t spend a fortune as even $20 gives inmates access to goods. For instance, inmates can use this money to buy shoes, snacks, and even funds so that they can contact loved ones via the phone.
